AbstractAbstract. The high alpha-diversity of tropical forest has been amply documented, but beta diversity - how species composition changes with distance - has seldom been studied (Condit et al. 2002). We present quantitative estimates of beta-diversity for Atlantic Forest trees by comparing species composition of phytosociological surveys in Atlantic Forest. We used a Geographic Information System to elaborate a data base about floristic information. We applied the Jacquard index to evaluate de similarity between areas. The Mantel test was performed to evaluate the correlation between floristic similarity, geographical distance and latitudinal range matrix. We found that beta-diversity is high in Atlantic Forest, and habitat variation appears to influence species geographic turnover. We concluded that tree species conservation of this threatened forest requires a system of sparsely distributed conservation units.
